Why everyone takes it
Every Florida electrical certification, from Unlimited and Residential to alarm, sign, limited energy, lighting maintenance and utility line, has to pass the same Business exam. It is the half of the licence that has nothing to do with wire: lien law, workers' comp, payroll tax, bidding, contracts and the statute that governs your licence. It is easy to leave until last, and it is the part nobody has been doing on the job for twelve years.
Who can sit it
Once DBPR approves your application for any electrical certification you can book the Business exam at Pearson VUE. You do not have to pass the Technical/Safety exam first; the two are booked separately and taken in either order.

Fifty scored questions in eleven subjects, 2½ hours, open book.

Five or more unscored pilot questions may be mixed in. All scored questions carry equal weight. The CIB's own sample questions show the flavour: how many continuing-education hours a renewal needs, the dollar threshold under which the Construction Lien Law does not apply, which asset is never depreciated, who pays FICA.
The book you bring
One book: the Florida Contractors Manual, 2021 edition, and you may bring a bound PDF of its index. Its chapters are largely reprints of documents you can read free, and that is what our lessons cite: Florida Statute 489 Part II and Chapter 61G6 of the Florida Administrative Code (your licence), Chapter 713 (Construction Lien Law), Chapter 440 (Workers' Compensation), the Reemployment Tax handbook, IRS Circular E, the Fair Labor Standards Act guide, OSHA recordkeeping, plus the accounting and bonding chapters. From August 21, 2027 the exam uses the 2025 edition of the Manual.
The same book rules apply as on the technical exam: permanent tabs only, no Post-it flags, no handwritten notes, one copy, and any PDF printed and bound.
How to book
Schedule with Pearson VUE online or at 1-888-204-6230 after DBPR approves you, five or more business days ahead if you can. Cancel or reschedule at least two days before or you may forfeit the fee.
Exam day
Thirty minutes early, two forms of signature identification (one government issued) matching your application, a silent non-printing calculator without an alphabetic keypad if you want one. A word-for-word translation dictionary is allowed after inspection. The tutorial does not count against your 2½ hours. Your score report prints before you leave.
If you do not pass
You get three attempts at the Business exam before you have to reapply to DBPR for a new authorization, which is friendlier than the technical exam's one-attempt-per-authorization rule. After a fail you can review the questions you missed, within 21 days, for one hour, at a Pearson VUE center, and challenge any of them in writing during the review.
Questions people ask
Do I need the Florida Contractors Manual, or can I study from the statutes?
You bring the Manual to the exam, because that is what the reference list allows. You can learn the material from the free statutes and federal guides its chapters reprint; every one of our Business questions cites the statute or guide, not the Manual page.
Is the Business exam the same for a Residential and an Unlimited applicant?
Yes. One Business exam, the same fifty-question outline, for all eight electrical certifications.
How much of it is Florida-specific?
The three subjects built on Florida law (contracting laws and rules, payroll and sales tax, insurance and bonding) are 15 to 21 of the 50 questions: Statute 489, the 61G6 rules, the lien law, workers' comp, reemployment tax and Florida sales tax. The rest is federal (FLSA, Circular E, OSHA recordkeeping, contract clauses) or general accounting, estimating and scheduling.
Is it in Spanish?
No, the exam is in English. A word-for-word translation dictionary is allowed. Our Business lessons and questions are in both languages.
