Lesson 01 covered the statute (F.S. 489 Part II). The Electrical Contractors' Licensing Board's rules fill in the numbers the statute leaves to the Board: how much experience, how much net worth, how much insurance, what the exam covers and what score passes, what each license may do, how many hours of continuing education, and what a violation costs. The Business exam's "laws and rules" questions draw on both.
1. Who may sit for certification — 61G6-5.003
One of four eligibility paths (489.511):

| (a) | 6 years | 3 years' proven management experience in the trade (or educational equivalent — not more than half; an engineering degree substitutes for 1 year) |
| (b) | 8 years | 4 years as a foreman, supervisor or contractor in the trade |
| (c) | 12 years | 6 years of comprehensive training, technical education or broad experience |
| (d) | 12 years | licensed 3 years as an engineer |
- For an electrical contractor the experience must include at least 40 % three-phase service work (alarm I: 40 % fire alarm; alarm II: 40 % non-fire alarm).
- Proof: a representative list of contracts (job, location, owner, architect/engineer, GC) or a Florida licensee's employment verification; third-party chronological experience statements with W-2 copies; a credit report dated within 12 months covering liens, judgments, suits and bankruptcies from county, state and federal records.
- 61G6-5.002: an application not completed within one year of filing is closed.
- Specialty exams (61G6-7.001): 6 years of comprehensive training, technical education or broad experience in that specialty.
