Chapter 18 is about reception of the signal — can the occupant hear it or see it. The exam numbers: temporal-3 (0.5/0.5/1.5 s), temporal-4 (100 ms × 4, 5 s off), 15 dB / 5 dB at 5 ft, 10 dB private, 75 dBA / 520 Hz sleeping, 105 / 110 dBA, 90 in. / 6 in. audible mounting, 1–2 Hz, 20 ms, 1000 cd, 80–96 in. lens, 15 cd / 15 ft / 100 ft corridors, 110 / 177 cd sleeping, 16 ft of the pillow.

- Every appliance is listed; nameplates state electrical requirements and rated audible or visual performance.
- Appliances for other than fire signaling shall not show the word FIRE or a fire symbol visible to the public.
- Guards, covers or lenses are listed for use with the appliance. Appliances are supported independently of their wiring connections and have terminals/leads for integrity monitoring.
