Conductor Ampacity
Table 310.16, Temperature Correction, Bundling Adjustment, Terminations and the Dwelling 83% Rule
NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, 2023 edition · Reviewed 2026-09-21
Both Florida technical exams carry conductor-sizing items, and the calculation items build them in layers: table value → correction → adjustment → termination limit → overcurrent device. This is the procedure, with the 2023 numbers.
1. Minimum sizes and materials — 310.3, 310.10(G)
- Minimum conductor size (310.3(A)): 14 AWG copper, or 12 AWG aluminium or copper-clad aluminium — except as permitted elsewhere in the Code (fixture wires, Class 1/2/3 circuits, motor control circuits, and so on).
- 310.3(C): 8 AWG and larger in a raceway must be stranded unless the Code specifically permits or requires solid; 310.3(B): solid aluminium is limited to 8, 10 and 12 AWG of AA-8000 alloy; stranded aluminium 8 AWG–1000 kcmil (RHH, RHW, XHHW, THW, THHW, THWN, THHN, SE) is AA-8000 too; copper-clad aluminium has a copper layer of at least 10 % of the area and is listed.
- Parallel conductors: 1/0 AWG and larger only, each set the same length, material, circular-mil size, insulation type, and termination method; separate raceways must carry the same number of conductors with the same characteristics; correction and adjustment still apply to each conductor; EGCs per 250.122 in each raceway.
